Which codes have cycle-free Tanner graphs?

چکیده
If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specifically, let C be an (n, k, d) linear code of rate R = k/n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R ≥ 0.5 then d ≤ 2, while if R < 0.5 then C is obtained from a code of rate ≥ 0.5 and distance ≤ 2 by simply repeating certain symbols. In the latter case, we prove that

Which Codes Have Cycle-free
If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n 2). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specically, let C be an (n;k;d) linear code of rate R = k=n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R 0:5 then d 2, while if R < 0:5...
متن کاملCodes and Decoding on General Graphs
Iterative decoding techniques have become a viable alternative for constructing high performance coding systems. In particular, the recent success of turbo codes indicates that performance close to the Shannon limit may be achieved. In this thesis, it is showed that many iterative decoding algorithms are special cases of two generic algorithms, the min-sum and sum-product algorithms, which also...
متن کاملRegular low-density parity-check codes from oval designs
This paper presents a construction of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on the incidence matrices of oval designs. The new LDPC codes have regular parity-check matrices and Tanner graphs free of 4-cycles. Like the finite geometry codes, the codes from oval designs have parity-check matrices with a large proportion of linearly dependent rows and can achieve significantly better minimum...
متن کاملLow Density Parity Check Codes Based on Finite Geometries and Balanced Incomplete Block Design
Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) Codes are the class of linear block codes which provide near capacity performance on large collection of data transmission channels while simultaneously feasible for implementable decoders. LDPC codes were first proposed by Gallger in 1967 [1] and were rarely used until their rediscovery by Mackay, Luby and others [9][10][11]. Much research is devoted to characte...
متن کاملTanner graphs for group block codes and lattices: Construction and complexity
We develop a Tanner graph (TG) construction for an Abelian group block code with arbitrary alphabets at different coordinates, an important application of which is the representation of the label code of a lattice. The construction is based on the modular linear constraints imposed on the code symbols by a set of generators for the dual code . As a necessary step toward the construction of a TG...
